Henry Hope Crealock was born in 1831, educated at Rugby following which he served in the army in the Crimean Campaign, the China Wars, the Indian Mutiny and the Zulu Wars, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant General.

During his army service he made sketches of the Zulu War for The Illustrated London News.
